The New York Times said:
"Subbulakshmi's vocal communication transcends words.
The cliché of `the voice used as an instrument' never seemed more appropriate.
It could fly flutteringly or carry on a lively dialogue with the accompanists.
Subbulakshmi and her ensemble are a revelation to Western ears.
Their return can be awaited only with eagerness."

Dr. W. Adriaansz, Professor of Music, University of Washington, wrote:
"For many, the concert by Mrs. Subbulakshmi meant their first encounter with the music of South India
and it was extremely gratifying that in her the necessary factors for the basis of a successful contact between her music and a new audience
- highly developed artistry as well as stage presence - were so convincingly present... without any doubt (she) belongs to the best representants of this music

Here is the link to New York Times Archive!

Why is it that we always talk about tradition as though it is supposed to be so rigid?
Why is it that we can't see tradition had some meaningful background then, but now?
Why is it that we are so lost in protecting our "culture", and so, forget its real meaning, and thereby lose our rich culture?
Why are we, even when praying to Perumal, lost in rituals at times, and forget their real meaning?

@KRS: What i meant was, am not 'against' tradition.
When tradition is to say Thirupaavai every morning, well and good.
When tradition is to spread bhakti, well and good.
When tradition, like PSP temple, is the recital of Prabandham, good.
But, what happens, like in MSS case here where she was censured for a truly pure act of hers?
While, it is easy for us to comment years later, what was it like for the harbinger of change? Would she not have doubted herself, whether she was right? When faced with such criticism, i mean?
Why was she faced with such a wave of criticism on the basis of what "tradition" demands, and her true heart of bhakti not recognized?
If she, and others like her, had given up, would we have the wealth of work today?
Today, there are a lot of rituals carried forward. But, the main aim of most of these rituals was to promote bhakti. But, today, people put those 'rituals' above everything else, and guard them like their life.
But, what happened to heartfelt involvement? And, if there is no involvement from the heart, what is the use of mere ritual?

//Why was she faced with such a wave of criticism

:)
No one will be automatically recognized!
It takes the struggle to be recognized!

In this case, MS as a person need not be recognized. But her lofty ideals of promoting bhakthi via music and known language, was missed by the so-called stalwarts at that time...

Prayers can move mountains, and the same thing happened and...now is no more a big issue! Everybody picks atleast one tamizh song in kutcheris :)

Radha, any comments? :)

@KK
When it comes to rituals there are two things...
1. Rituals for His sake
2. Rituals to protect the institution
It all depends on where the focus is! Let us stick to Pt #1

There is a ritual of putting a cloth screen before the Lord, when procession starts (not the naivedyam)! This is to bond the devotees to him, when they suddenly open it, to see all his glory under a camphor lit fire...like leaning up & waving to amma appa from a distance in the airport :)

But in some places, they use this for something else...to protect their own institution. They put this cloth, whenever they cross the sannithi of a particular devotee, whom they dont like! (Dont want to use names)! So, They put a cloth to hide PerumaaL from that devotee! ha ha ha! They dont even think, how can such a great perumaaL can be hidden in one small cloth screen? :))

Thatz the downside of rituals! It all depends on the percentage of focus prevalent in society for that particular ritual! If the focus is Him, it is pleasing to heart! If not, such squabbles occur! :)

My point is very simple:

This happened in PSP temple day before yesterday.
They successfully plucked the cellphone from her hands (all in front of the Urchavar PSP who was just before us...the Grand Witness) and left her in great embarrassment. And these are the folks who have been involved in temple service for years and years !! Finally they asked her to delete the image and returned the phone back to her. Not even a single soul spoke in support of her.
"இந்த அழகை மனசுல பிடிக்க தெரியாம தான் அவங்க அப்படி செஞ்சாங்க". but nobody understood !!

@Radha: Yes, you are right.
But, there are 2 facts to be considered here.
1) The woman was a true devotee, taking pics of dear PSP.
2) But, there are scandolous people too who are bent on broadcasting the fact that they managed to take pics inside the temple.

In the minds of the temple devotees, they are trying to follow some rules.
And, without rules, there is nothing.
And, i actually myself know some of the service people to be great, from-the-heart devotees.
And, i think, it is their years of service, years of seeing mischief and stopping it, that goes against their ability to see the devotion in the act.

Last year, even i was reprimanded for taking a photo (i really didn't know it was supposed to be wrong to use the cam inside the kodimaram). A few people did shout,understandably, but it died down when i put my mobile inside.

And, that time, while i knew my side was not wrong, i could see that they were not wrong too.
Only PSP can read my mind, they can't. If i took a pic, i would definitely not misuse it, but what if like me, someone took a pic and
misused it?

But, this is the point i stand for. The woman could have been explained in a very understandable manner. The photo could still have been deleted, but without the mess.

But, all the same, i would ask you not to go totally judgemental against the people there. Because, both sides had a genuine intention of serving the Lord, or rather, protecting the Lord (one in the frame of a mobile, and other, in the rule book) let's leave it at that: rules be rules.

But, i am talking about rituals, in the sense that, we tend to get so lost to pride, we forget our positions.
Some people take great pride in "tradition", but fail to see the "bhakti" that it prescribed. When the tradition by itself a means to infuse bhakti, what use is the rituals performed by that person without any heart-felt involvement?
You put it beautifully in a previous post- "The truest knowledge is realization of His love".

//My point is very simple:

Long story, short...
To effect a change of the heart,
A change has to be effected!
