Finally, we come to read the ten by the Tiruchi dalit saint.

Thank you for your graceful help, esp on behalf of Uraiyur residents - his birth place!

Meantime, I need a slight clarification.

Of the Azwaars, two are said to worship only the God of Srirangam. In other words, they did not move out of the places of their residence Srirangam. I am referring to Dondaraippodiyaazvaar and this Thirupaanaatru aazvaar.

This being the case, I am surprised to see வேங்கடவன் in this first passuram.

Is he referring to the God of Tirupathi or just Srirangam. If the latter, is He also addressed as வேங்கடவன்?

Being steeped in Azvaar paasurams, you will definitely make us, the Uraiyur residents, understand!

Waiting early

Jo
A vicarious Uraiyur resident

I will follow you in all the ten passurams - only - and comment.

@ஜோ,
Thanks for your kind words.

He is same, but His appearance is different, na? :)

It's the utsava moorthy of Ranga and PP i got confused with.
i know it's stupid, but, i couldn't help it.
Like, i could instantly recognize Ranga.
But, PP, i took some time. i was so stupid-i thought it was Ranga again.

btw, ennai madhiri background-e illadha people-kkaga oru explanation: azhwar Ranga-vai paadi appo PP-yai ninaikiraara, illa PP-yai paadi Ranga-vai ninaikiraara??

Yes, but, only bcoz we see Him in different forms can we describe Him differently?

-Narasimhar: Arimugan, bhaktavatsalan, etc.
-Ramar: Bhaktan-ai kaapavar, etc.
-Krishna: Haiyyo! no comment due to lack of space. Or, i'll just say "azhagan!"

Ippo Krishna romba kovam aayidraaru-nnu vachikonga.
"Why is your face like Narasimmhar"-nnu ketkalaam.
Or, if Narasimhar is wearing a peacock feather (i think you would have noticed in PSP temple), you can say- "Narasimmhar-a? Krishna-va?"

So, only coz PP is standing on top of a temple, we can say - "Kundrin mel kallagi nirkindra varada"
And, only because PSP is with us in Triplicane can we say- "Geethacharyan, Manushya Vasudevan!"

But, doesn't mean we differentiate.
Perumal becomes the Parent (Place of Birth), owner and Lord (native place), lover (in my case, place of residence), friend, master and also everything else.
Only when i give Him different portfolios, different roles, i feel happy.

The writer Radha is addressed here, I think.

His legend says he never moved out of Uraiyur.

His going to Srirangam - a town away frm Uraiyur - was not of his own. But forced. He was aware it would be asking for the moon: the scriptures forbade people like him to enter any city or town. In Uraiyur he lived in his own dalit quarters.

But he concentrated on the God of Srirangam.

But he is referring to Tirupathi in two places. He is giving the name of Tirupathi God to Srirangan. Or calls Him as Venkatavan. Using the same name.

If he was aware of Tirupathi, why he didn't go there? Of course, he wouldnt be allowed. Still he could go as near as the Hills which could be seen from far away; or upto Keezh Tirupathi. No one could stop him.

Going on pilgrimage by walk was common in those days. Why didn't he do that?

If the answer is, he concentrated on God of Srirangam only, why so?

The writer should make us think more with her explanation. Could she?

@Jo,
You are asking questions for which I don't have clear answers. :-) One can only speculate about the actions of a great soul...and in this case, we are talking about the life of a person who lived thousands of years ago...well, we can provide a zillion explanations as to why the Azhwar did like that and why he didn't do like that...but I sincerely believe that the actions of a true devotee/gnani are inscrutable...very much like the actions of the Lord. I believe that the only way to truly understand great souls is to become one !

//The writer should make us think more with her explanation. Could she? //
SHE can't. Never in this birth. :-)

Regarding your other question on two Azhwars who sang only about Arangan...I was talking to my friends. They were suggesting that you might have heard about two Azhwars who didn't sing about Venkatavan or Thirupathi Perumal.

1) Thondaradipodi Azhwar - Didn't sing about any other divya desam perumal except Ranganathar
2) Madhurakavi Azhwar - Didn't sing about Perumal at all. He sang only about his guru, Nammazhvar.

"I believe that the only way to truly understand great souls is to become one !"

It is not possible for mortal souls like us to become as paramagnani or gnani as the azhwaars.

Then, what else can we be, and still be the devotees of the God we worship?

If one cant even believe like you do above, then what for Azhawaars are ? Why do we read them at all ?

These are very serious theological questions for which I do have answers, but cant write here.

Others may perhaps write a little on such questions. Pl try.

Rendering the paasurams in easy Tamil, and from the reactions here, and elsewhere, one concludes that the passurams evoke feelings of ardour of spirituality: பரவசமாக இருக்கிறது.

Such words of appreciation remind me of urdu poetry conferences where the audience shake there heads saying adadaa arumai. I refer to Urdu Poetry conferences because it is customary and compulsory to show your reaction by body language.

I am not hurting anyone here who have written that. I only ask: is it for that the paasurams meant for?

Or, is it for making us, as you believe, gnani?

The second is also impossible.

In such circumstances, what are the passurams for?

If there are no benefits, are such passurams a waste?

The answer should be defintiely a NO.

But what is the answer?

You will give ten passurams one by one, and I have to read the comments:

I am not satisfied. Like me, there may be so many.

Something seriously missing somewhere ! Where ? What ? Who will tell me that ?

I dont hope you wont like such kind of intellectual debate over Azhwaar paasurams. Let me stop.

In Love With Krishna said...

@Jo:
i am sorry to enter your conversation thus, but i must.
You seem to refute the very purpose of this blog, and the very basis of Sri Vaishnavam by your statements.

First of all, the paasurams of Alwars cannot make anyone 'gnani', simply because if you are looking for 'gnan' alone, you have lost it, according to the Alwars.
Second of all, there is only one Tendulkar, but does that mean everyone else cannot bat? We may not make 50 test centuries, but what of the joy of playing cricket?
So, a kid learning cricket in this age may think : okay, i want to be like Tendulkar.
But, first and foremost, He must play the game, enjoy it.
So, we are all kids here, learning bhaki. The alwars and Aandal are on the highest siritual platform of purest bhakti.
We, on the other hand, are making our baby strides there.
It is not pride which makes me say nothing, except we ourself, can stop us from reaching that platform.
But, to reach there, what is important, is not seeking the tags, or celebrity, or fame attached with that platform. The Alwars sought none of it.
It was the purest of bhakti that elevated them there.
We can go on striving, yes, with diligence and determination, not for the benefit of reaching that platform, but with love, and increasing love for Perumal, by complete surrender.

Even then, there's no failure here.
Failure is non-acceptance of His greatness.
Failure is atheism and agnostic attitude.
Once you have, even once, inadvertently even maybe, utterered His name, recognized Him as your master, there is no real failure for such a soul.

In Love With Krishna said...

@Jo:
First of all, i don't understand the focus on 'dalit' here.
Yes, Tirupaanalwar came from that society, but most alwars are from different classes of society.
Yes, maybe he was discriminated against, but it is only to refute that is he one of the epitomes of bhakti.
Bhakti is common to any man, or woman, or animal, or plant.
Bhakti elevates a person from wherever he is.
There is a reason why Alwar refers to Tirupati here.
The Lord is standing in Tirupati, while He is reclining on His adishesha here.
Note that the main focus of this paasuram is singing the willingness of Perumal to go to any extent for His devotee.
So, Perumal, is most enticing to the heart, in His majestic reclining form.
But, yet, such is His concern for His devotees that He assumes a 'standing position' to bless His devotees.
He stands, gives us joy, and has no qualms doing that.
He has no qualms being at the service of His devotees.
That's what Alwar meant to stress.
That His beautiful "கமலபாதம்" worthy of all the worship in the world, will even undergo all the pain in the world for He is விமலன், நிமலன், நின்மலன்.
That is why seeing Ranganathar's feet takes Him to thinking of Tirupati, where the same Lord stands.

Besides, none of the Alwars put foot on Tirupati, irrespective of any class or creed.
They thought it unsacred to put foot on the hill.
They confined themselves to the foothills and sang His praises from there.
It was Sri Ramanuja who was persuaded, part by his followers and part by Perumal, to climb the hill and set an example for Perumal's devotees to follow.
Even HE went on his knees, so as not to pollute Tirupati. He is said to have stopped all mortal activities temporarily before going up there.

So, contrary to what you state, while anyone could have made the journey up, if they could brave the dense forests, none of the Alwars did, out of respect for the hills.

Read ILWK. Hope to hear from others too.

May Radhamohan, Shailaja, Kumaran and krs who have written here, give their understanding.

Questions are:

Whether the mortal identification (of being a dalit) to be dropped by the ordinary people like us, or to be pointed out when we read the paasurams of Thiruppaanaar?

Do you agree with the statement that none of the azvaars went to Tirupathi Hill for fear they would pollute it; and all of them stayed down below and worshipped?

What benefits do you like to derive from these passurams? Just literary or spiritual pleasures only? Why do we read the paasruams then?

How does asking such questions violate the very basis of Srivaishanvaism,as ILKW says?

What is that basis, according to you? Saranakathi? Anyting more?

Pl put up your views or understandings.

So, do reply: what DO you think is the benefit of the paasurams?

@Jo,
Its been quite some time since I stopped debating over spiritual matters....but I don't ask others to stop. Debates in spiritual matters start on a less serious note in an apparently harmless manner...but they invariably end up offending one party or the other. I leave it to you and the other members whom you have asked for comments. Hope everyone is mature enough to keep it at a generic level without personalizing things.
A small request. I have a few more posts pending to be posted in this auspicious month of Margazhi. While we all keep discussing here, I wish the other posts keep moving. Hope you will be fine with that. :-)

//மந்தி பாய் வட வேங்கட மாமலை, வானவர்கள், சந்தி செய்ய நின்றான் = அரங்கத்து அரவின் அணையான்//

//If there are no benefits, are such passurams a waste?//

:)

In response to your statements, i would like to clarify somethings which i did say.

//What benefits do you like to derive from these passurams? Just literary or spiritual pleasures only? Why do we read the paasruams then?

How does asking such questions violate the very basis of Srivaishanvaism,as ILKW says?

What is that basis, according to you? Saranakathi? Anyting more? //

What i meant 'violating Sri Vaishnavism' is your linking of 'intellect' with Alwar Pasurams.
Till now, you have stated that you are an intellectual without vested interests.

Perumal is the giver of intellect.
He is the Creator, Maintainer of all things our intellect can percieve, and much beyond.
Newton famously stated that 'science' and 'discovery' was like throwing a pebble into an ocean to determine it's depth.
Though we may try, it is beyond the scope of our intellects to understand Perumal.
So, in case of trying to understand the paasurams of Alwars, intellect, by itself, is a vested interest.

So, how do we really reach out?
The connection goes from the heart.
He is the Paramatma ruling all our hearts, and it is through our hearts that we can connect.
The feelings of people on this blog, you say, surprise you.
You say you are not satisfied.

Let me bring to your notice one thing: the Alwars, never set out to become gnanis.
They set out to sing His praises, to establish the connect with Him.

So, how come they are touted as gnanis?
Because, doing so, they had gained the prime most of intellectual knowledge.
In this world where change is the only constant, they had established the connect with the only Universal Constant.
He is the source of all intellect, and they had Him!

They never sought any pedestal like gnani. Not one of them.
...

In Love With Krishna said...

So, the real enjoyment of Alwar's Pasurams is not just 'literary'.
It is where the literary aspect points.
There may be hundreds who will write about Him.
But, there's will be the gems.
Why?
Because, one word takes us to thinking about Perumal.
That is the comfort the people on the comment's page talked about.
The Paasurams directed our thoughts to Him, who will take a hundred steps towards us, if only we took one.
The Pasurams took us to Him, who is our shelter.
That, indeed, is the phala of the paasurams.
They are perhaps, to mundane eyes, a waste.
But, to the eyes that have even once set their glances on Him, they are the best of the best.

It is not LITERARY.
It is not even SPIRITUAL, if spiritual implies something other than thinking of Him.

That is what i meant by against 'Sri Vaishnavism'- the attempt to percieve Him through one's intellect. It is highly impossible (Paasurams are not intellectual, they are the feelings of a true devotee)
The only way to percieve Him is through our heart.
Sharanagathi may follow, must follow, but Sharanagathi by itself is not a means to an end.
It is not a road that may culminate at moksha.
Sharanagathi is the establishment of the Supreme connection.
It is a point of infinite love where nothing else seems important.
Where, a person is ready to leave all the ties that hold him/her back from establishing the only true relationship.

Forgive me if this suggestion is too intrusive, but you may just understand people's feeling on this post's comments if you did this: Just go to your nearby temple, and try taking in the meaning of the Pasuram, standing in front of Him.

@Jo,
The way you have addressed us - as bhakthas - is very heartening to read. As an intellectual you may be knowing that bhakthi is nothing but expression of love. The whole world is moved by the force called love. The lower forms of love are selfish and may degenerate to fanaticism. Bhakthi at its glory, is love for love's sake. Through pasurams we are trying to dig deep into our own hearts and strike gold. You too should be having it in your heart of hearts. Thats why you were able to address us that way. :-)
May the Lord shower His choicest blessings on you brother !

This is not the place for me to talk about my approach to azvaars. I can, however, say I am not seeing myself one with you. I am an odd man out here!

My approach to azwaars is all my own. I think that is the right way for me: me and Azvaars - all alone ! Perhaps I may write all about the way in my blog some time in future.

May the blessing of Thiruvaazh Maarban upon you and all your near and dear sure as it did on Azvaar's mother and azvaar too. நிமலன், isnt he? I live close by, in fact, so near to it, rather inside too: திருவெண்பரிசாரம் @ திருப்பதிசாரம், the abode of Thiruvaazh Maarban in Nagercoil.

Nammazvaar describes himself. Quite interesting. More on my blog on this. A different take on Azvaars.

Thx.

@Jo,
May Thiru Vaazh Marban shower His blessings on all of us ! Its a bit unfortunate that people lost patience when you kept asking for comments one by one without providing your own. Please bear with us. And yes, I would be interested in reading your article and your take on Azhvaars !

@Jo,
Able to appreciate your stance. Just like each one of us has a unique approach towards the Lord...each creature has his/her/its own speciality. Regarding Thiruvaimozhi, its a veritable mine of a variety of gems. Literally every person would be able to strike a chord with it. Intellectual philosophers, emotionally inclined bhakthas, dwaitins, visishtadvatins, advaitins, monks, householders, poets, musicians,...name a category - they will be able to find a set of pasurams which would appeal to them very much. That you have a different view is no wonder ! :-)
