தாமரை மலர்ந்த பொழுது...

On the day when the lotus bloomed, alas, my mind was straying, and I knew it not. My basket was empty and the flower remained unheeded.

Only now and again a sadness fell upon me, and I started up from my dream and felt a sweet trace of a strange fragrance in the south wind. That vague sweetness made my heart ache with longing and it seemed to me that it was the eager  breath of the summer seeking for its completion.
I knew not then that it was so near, that it was mine, and that this
perfect sweetness had blossomed in the depth of my own heart.

When the lotus bloomed, my mind was straying-
Alas! it had a face of gloom when i was actually searching!

The sweetness haunted me, teased me,
Pulled me, called me, hypnotised me;
The perfect beauty then unnoticed,
Now left me with a longing unvanquished.

Then, on one fine summer day,
By the intervention of a divine ray;
The lotus, i found, in the depth of my heart-
And oh! it was tearing my convictions apart!

For, They were the Lotus Feet,
Of the Lord who held me up with His Lotus Palms,
One little essence of Him, and all my problems did fleet-
As my Krishna takes care of me like a grain in His Palms.

Those were not my lines, but the lines sung by a devotee in praise of Mahara Nedung Kuzhaikaathar of Thenthiruperai.

"Kaiyaga nellipol emmai kaathalikkum malarvannan..."

btw, Thenthiruperai is one of the famous nava tirupatis.
Here, the king was planning to build 108 houses for 108 families. Perumal Himself came as the 108th person and made that Pandiya King build a temple for Him.

Perumal here asked Sannathi Garudan to move aside as He wanted to see the 'Pizhai Kuzha Vilayattu Ozhi'' on the Sannathi street (a rather big one)
Nammazhwar sings:
Vellai Suri Sangodu Azhi Eyndhi
Thaamarai Kannan En Nenjinode,
Pizhai Kadaagindra Aatraikaanir En Solli Solliguren Annaimeerkaal:
Vellai sugumavan veetrirundha vedha ozhiyum vizha ozhiyum,
Pizhai Kuzha Vilaiyaatoliyum Mara Thiruperaiyin Servan Naane!"

(perumal, in this temple, asked the Sannithi Garuda, who is usually right in front of Him, to step aside as He wished to see the people playing on the streets)

Nammazhwar, in the last line, says "Thiruperaiyin Sevan Naane!" (Of this great Thenthiruperai Lord, i am a servant)
People usually talk about giving up the concept of 'i' in devotion.
But, nammazhwar, foremost of His devotees, says - "Sevan Naane!" (Servant, i am)
Naane! (I am) says Nammazhwar
His slave i am! - Thus proclaims Nammazhwar.

That took me to the BG: Krishna says give up your 'false-pride', not your pride.
And what, is our pride?
Our true positions!
So, what is pride?
Nammazhwar puts it beautifully- "His servant i am!"
"Thiruperaiyin Servan Naane!"
Our real pride- our association with Him, serving Him, loving Him, chanting His glories, proclaiming to the whole wide world that we are His slaves, His devotees...

In Love With Krishna said...

(Continued)
Coming back to 'kaiyaga nelli pol', this devotee was put in jail as he did not pay tax. He began composing a 100-song 'Paamalai'. Perumal came in the dreams of the King and ordered the release of His devotee.
He sang about 60 songs inside the prison, and the remaining 40 after Perumal released him.

btw, Perumal here is considered to be family by the people of Thenthiruperai. He is not kula deivam for any of them, as He is one among the 108 famlies. :)

"என் பெருமாள் அவர் ! என் நெஞ்சை கவர்ந்த முகில் வண்ணன் !"

தமிழ் படிக்க சுலபமா இருக்கு. ஆங்கிலமும் படிக்க சுலபமா இருக்கு. ஆங்கிலத்தில் தமிழ் படிக்க கஷ்டமா இருக்கு. :-)

Enakku Perumal-kku magilam poo korka pidikkum!
i remember, last time, when i was in tperai, i badly wanted to do it. So, i went, and oh! there were not many flowers.
Actually, the tree there is very old, i think, as old as the temple itself (quite older than the one in PSP temple)
As it is said that the tree itself is Thaayar's tree, i prayed for flowers, as much as He would like.
And, then, there was this strong breeze (strong, yet, a breeze) and the flowers just kept on falling, even though it was not the season.
And, seeing me pick flowers, even some nice tourists, whom i put mokkai with telling about the temple, helpd me by getting some flowers!
That day, what i started at 05:00 didn't get over till 11:30 at night! So many flowers!
And, i absolutely love putting the flowers in, one by one. Usually, i leave a message with each flower. :)
btw, i have a doubt. (Mr. Radha?) Why is it that there are not many flowers in the PSP temple tree? Whenever i see, there ARE no flowers.

In Love With Krishna said...

@Radha: Sorry, the pasuram i have just posted is also full of errors, now that i tried reading (this is why i don't type Tamil).
The pasuram i was mentioning is actually in the Tiruperai pathu itself (that's the reason why i know it), i think the 5th song.
